Afton was first permanently settled in 1837, platted in 1855, and organized into a Township in 1858. The township, and later city, got its name from Robert Burns’ poem entitled Sweet Afton, describing the area’s native beauty. From the first post office in built in 1854 to the arrival of the railroad to later growth and modernization, Afton has always maintained a strong and thriving connection to its natural resources. Today, Afton is home to approximately 3,000 residents, and is a tourist destination for those wanting to experience Minnesota’s beauty.
